This dataset includes references to a repository containing scripts for evaluating a novel replicability methodology for Earth System Models, together with references to datasets that can be used to reproduce our analysis based on the Community Earth System Model 2 (CESM2) Large Ensemble Community Project (LENS2), as presented in the associated publication (see Related Publication). The complete set includes:
The LENS2 project provides open access to multi-decadal climate simulation data at 1-degree horizontal resolution, conducted with a large ensemble comprising 100 members. The simulation covers a historical period (1850-2014) and a future projection (2015-2100), following the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) scenario SSP3-7.0. This ensemble is divided into two 50-member sub-ensembles which use different Biomass burning (BMB) emissions protocols during 1997-2014: one uses a protocol identical to that used in the CESM2 presentation paper Danabasoglu et al., 2020
(DOI: 10.1029/2019MS001916); and one uses a smoothed version of this BMB protocol (11-year running means) that is more comparable to the treatment of BMB emissions used before 1997 and after 2014.
We provide full 100-member ensembles with monthly means of the variables listed below, together with observational reference datasets for the respective variables:
- tas - 2m air temperature (K)
- psl - Sea level pressure (Pa)
- ta - Air temperature at 200 and 850 hPa (K)
- ua - Zonal wind at 200 and 850 hPa (m/s)
- va - Meridional wind at 200 and 850 hPa (m/s)
- tauu - Zonal surface stress (Pa)
- tauv - Meridional surface stress (Pa)
- hus - Specific humidity at 300 and 850 hPa (kg/kg)
- tos - Sea surface temperature (K)
